Southern Hills, one of the oldest and best known subdivisions in Springfield Missouri, was developed in 1955 by partners John Q. Hammons and Lee McLean Jr. The developers wanted to create a unique neighborhood experience like nothing else in Springfield. The neighborhood was masterfully designed to include three large lakes, over-sized lots, meandering streets, and an Olympic-style swimming pool. After construction, interest grew and Southern Hills quickly became one of the most prominent neighborhoods to build a home.

Many of the features that made Southern Hills appealing to homeowners in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s are still what attract homeowners to the neighborhood today. Homes remain in high-demand and property values continue to rise. Many homes within Southern Hills have recently been remodeled; however, the mid-20th Century roots of the neighborhood are still visible in the architecture today.

In 2018, Southern Hill’s residents formed a Community Improvement District (CID). The purpose of the CID is to preserve, protect and improve the lakes and common areas surrounding the lakes. Revenue for the CID is generated from a property tax placed on homes within the CID. Less than a year after forming the CID, our efforts appear to be paying off. Many longtime and new residents alike agree, the lakes have never looked better.

Southern Hills continues to be a prized neighborhood for Springfield families. Current and ongoing efforts to preserve the history, natural beauty and unique architectural qualities of our neighborhood ensure Southern Hills will continue as a premier neighborhood for the next 60 years.
